Tax & Prize Reporting

Last updated: June 30, 2026

This page explains, in plain terms, how prizes you earn on Square Off may be treated for tax, when we may need to collect tax information from you, and what you are responsible for. It is general information, not tax advice — please consult a qualified tax professional about your own situation.

This is not tax advice. Tax rules vary by country, state, and individual circumstances and change over time. Nothing on this page is a substitute for advice from a qualified tax professional or the relevant tax authority.

1. Your responsibility

You are solely responsible for determining and paying any taxes that apply to prizes you earn on Square Off, and for reporting them where your local law requires. Prizes you win may be taxable income depending on where you live and how much you earn.

2. When we may collect tax information

In some jurisdictions, a business that pays out prizes must collect tax information from a recipient and report payouts to the tax authority once those payouts reach a reporting threshold in a calendar year. To meet those obligations:

  • Information request (e.g. a W-9 in the United States). If your cumulative prize payouts in a calendar year approach or reach the applicable reporting threshold — currently $2,000 for U.S. players — we may ask you to provide tax information before we can process further cash-outs. We collect this through a secure third-party verification provider.
  • Information return (e.g. a 1099 in the United States). Where required, we may issue an information return to you and to the relevant tax authority reporting the prizes paid to you for the year.
  • Holds. If we are required to collect tax information and you do not provide it, we may pause cash-outs until you do, as described in our Terms.

Thresholds and requirements are set by law and may change; the figure above is current as of the “Last updated” date and applies to U.S. players. Players in other jurisdictions may be subject to different rules.

3. How we handle tax information

Tax information is sensitive. We collect it only when needed to meet a legal obligation, through a secure third-party identity and tax-verification provider, and we handle it in line with our Privacy Policy. We do not store full tax identification numbers ourselves where the verification provider holds them on our behalf.

4. Getting help

For questions about your own tax position, please speak to a qualified tax professional or your local tax authority. For questions about how Square Off collects or reports prize information, contact us at contact@squareoff.gg.

5. Changes

We may update this page as tax requirements or our processes change. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above.
